FORM:

What does mistreating animals mean to us? What wild species are mistreated in Asia?

Mistreating animals means to not treat animals the right way and/or the way they should be treated.

It also means that killing animals and hurting them. An example of this is like when we cage animals and kill them so we can use them to make products out of their skin or horns. We use them and therefore the animals may not survive.

People don't understand and don't care about animals and how their actions can contribute to species of animals to be endangered.

Mistreating animals isn't always direct, sometimes we can kill them by destroying their homes, so they will have to find somewhere else to live, or if we damage their environment, they might die because they can't escape the machines, fire and smoke, etc we create. By creating too much heat and smoke, many animals will die of the heat or suffocation. Would you want your home to be destroyed? Would you like you and your family to suffocate? No, of course not. So stop and think whenever you cut down a tree or waste a piece of paper: "Is it worth it? Is it worth destroying an animal's innocent home for a piece of paper? Is it worth wasting the paper?"

Key Words:
Mistreating- to treat someone or something badlyEnvironment- Nature and HabitatRights- choice to do thingsSurvive- to remain alive
What does mistreating animals mean to us?Wild Species that are mistreated by hunters and poachers are mostly vulnerable species.
  • Such as the Great white shark, they are being hunted for shark fin soup.
  • The cheetah, also at a vulnerable state, are hunted for there fur but with their speed and agility, they can easily escape hunters if not yet tired out.
  • The hippopotamus are hunted for their teeth to make trophies, but they are also sold at a high price at international black markets that are well hidden from the government.
  • Polar Bear, at a vulnerable state, they are occasionally hunted for their fur but killed most frequently for a human's self defense.
  • Grizzly Bear, at a endangered state, they are hunted for no particular reason, maybe for their fur or for their self defense as they are very aggressive.
  • African Lion, at a vulnerable state, are hunted to make trophies out of their parts.
  • African Bush Elephant, at a vulnerable state, they are being hunted by the hundreds, but due to the massive amount in numbers, they are not yet considered endangered, but they are a very easy kill and will occasionally charge at humans if threatened.
  • Black Rhinoceros, critically endangered for their horns for many reasons such as for medicine, trophies, etc.

HELP SAVE THESE HUNTED, ENDANGERED, ANIMALS!
Key word:
Vulnerable : Vulnerable means open for an attack, Are clearly visible, Can be Attacked

What products are used or sold here in Singapore or Asia that use such animal products?
Animal products are basically having a product consuming animal goods. In Asia animal products are mostly for food consumption or food products which use wild animal meat . However, they still use it to make

  • animal skin travel bags
  • animal skin shoes
  • animal skin dress
  • animal fur coats
  • animal fur shoes

There are industries that cage all the animals and then like they do with snakes, hang them up and take their fur and use it to make clothes and sell it.
Key words: Products- Things made out of somethingConsuming- Using some thing Consumption- The amount we use Industries- A place we produce something/ factory

CAUSATION:Why are these wild species mistreated in Asia ?
      • A sign of wealth to have these products
      • The people who poach for the animal products get paid a lot of money
      • Consumerism - people are buying so the shop owners think it is a need and can make money.
      • Entertainment and sports
      • Consumer product testing and food.

Asian Elephants, the only elephant species used by most circuses, including Ringling Brothers, are endangered in the wild, due to poaching, hunting, and the destruction of their natural habitat. Asian elephants’ range includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. They are listed as “endangered” under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, which prohibits anyone from “killing,” “harming,” or “harassing” them.'

    • "Bears riding motorcycles, tigers jumping through flaming hoops and pigs leaping off diving boards. Just some of the "entertainment" that can be seen at circuses, zoos and safari parks in China, according to a report by Animals Asia into animals cruelty.'
    • (Above info is from CNN news )

    • Key Words:
    • Habitat - Its a home for Animals.
    • Natural Disaster - An event or force of nature that has bad consequences, such as
    • avalanche, earthquake, flood, forest fire, hurricane, lightning, tornado, tsunami, and volcanic eruption.
    • Harass -To keep disturbing or hitting.

Change:
How is animal cruelty affecting Asia?
Environment:
If animals continue to be mistreated then the animals will all be gone, this would be a huge risk to the environment and also under the sea.

If the Sharks were extinct:
  • Fish that used to be eaten by sharks would increase;
  • The sea would be over crowded;
  • Not enough food for every species underwater so they would become extinct;
  • The big animals in the water such as whale shark would become extinct too because their food are has gone.

If the Orangutan were extinct:
  • The plants/animals that the Orangutan ate will overpopulate.
  • The rain forest would lose natural balance and get ruined.
  • Too many trees will overpopulate the area as the orangutan eats plants, and that will mean no more trees can grow because there isn't any space left or it will expand into the human territory.

If the key stone species such as tigers was extinct:
  • places that was tiger's house is going to be over crowded;
  • the food for the species living in rain forest is going to end;
  • the species living in rain forest such as tigers, rhino is going to die.

So animal cruelty could be the one of the reason that collapse whole ecosystem in Asia.

Keystone Species: Species of animals that balance the ecosystem and the food cycle.
Tigers, Sharks, etc.

  • Animals that were eaten by big animals will overpopulate.

So animal cruelty could be the one of the reason that collapse whole ecosystem in Asia.

People:
  • If the sharks were extinct there would be an overcrowded ocean which will mean we might have keep fishing to maintain the balance in the ocean. The fish won't have any natural predators and maybe we won't be able to fish some species as they are endangered or are inedible so they will just keep multiplying and overcrowd the sea. There won't be any space left in the ocean. Also, when we travel in the ocean we will damage the fish and they will all get killed and will be left in the ocean to rot. We on the other hand will have plenty of fish to eat.

  • If the tiger were extinct, the tigers won't be able to attack our livestock and us. But the natural balance of the environment will collapse and we will have to keep killing animals to sustain the balance of nature. We will have to put more effort to watch over the animals that will be poached. The animals that will be poached might not have any natural predators

FUNCTION:
How do poachers kill animals in Asia?
The tiger :
We have lost 97% of wild tigers in just over a century. Tigers may be one of the honored animals, but they are also vulnerable to extinction. About 3,200 exist in the wild today. The equipment the poachers use to kill a tiger is using guns as it is very dangerous to come near to one. When the tiger is dead they pull the skin of to sell it. They also kill tigers to use their body parts for traditional Chinese medicine. Another thing is that farmers take the tigers habitat by growing crops there.

Key Words:
Honored - Admire
Habitat - Were they live.

Sharks:
One of the main reasons for shark hunting has been to destroy or kill them. First, people catch the sharks by hooks. While the sharks are still alive they cut of the fins and throw the sharks back in the ocean. The sharks will drown without their fins and will sadly die. Shark fin soup is a popular soup item of Chinese cuisine, usually served at special occasions such as weddings and banquets, or as a luxury item in Chinese culture. You should encourage restaurants to not serve this dish anymore. Even though sharks are an enemy to many people, this is a terrible way to treat any animal.

Key word:
Occasions- Special times, Banquets = A party

Orangutans:
The main reason Orangutans are getting extinct are no guns, bullets or knives, it is bulldozers. People destroy the Orangutans habitats by destroying the rain forest and planting Palm Oil. A very horrible thing is that poachers kill the mother with guns. While the baby is sitting next to the mother, wondering what has happened to her, the poachers catch the baby and put it in a cage. Later on, they sell it as a pet or to a Zoo. You can help the orangutans by not buying Palm oil. It's also important to not have wild animals like orangutans as pets. How cute and adorable they might look they don't belong in your house, they belong in the rainforest with trees.

Key words:
Bulldozers - Things that help you cut down trees.

Elephants:

People use guns, knives, arrows or even spears to kill the elephants but they still have little chance to survive. The elephant is one of the Big 5 species which can be hunted for trophies on a hunting-safari in South Africa, accompanied by experienced professional hunters. Also, in Asia elephants are hunted illegally. A main reason to hunt the elephant is for their tusks. From the elephant tusk you make ivory. From ivory you make jewelery, decorations and other things. Ivory is expensive and popular and because of that the poachers keep on hunting them as lots of people want it. A world without elephants is hard to comprehend, but it is a real possibility. If we don't stop hunting we won't have a single elephant left in 12 years!

Key words :
Big 5 - 5 Animals
Ivory- A very expensive thing that is from elephant tusks

Rhino:
1,000 rhinos are butchered in just 18 months. Stop poaching, as this species is close to extinction. In Asia there are only 3 types of rhino species left and there are very few of them. There are 3,333 Greater one- horned, less then 100 Sumatran rhinos and 35-45 Java rhinos left in Asia. Poachers use a GPS, helicopters, and semi-automatic weapons to hunt these rhino's. Poachers cut of the horns and leave the rhino. Most of the times after the rhino's horn is cut of they survive but sometimes die. People use the rhinos horns for traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for Cancer treatment but as everybody knows IT'S COMPLETELY USELESS.

Key words:

GPS - A global positioning system
Semi Automatic weapon - A type of gun
Extinction - When something comes to an end. E.g. Animals like the Dodo are extinct.

CONNECTION:
How does animal cruelty connect to us?

Animal cruelty connects to us because we are the only ones that use the products that consume animal goods. If we buy the product that is made of animals we are like killing the animals. When we buy the products with animal goods, poachers will kill more animals because they think that we want them and therefore they get more money and the shops that sell the animal product will get more money too.

If this goes on and the poachers kill a lot of animals like the shark and the elephant, they will be endangered. We will never be able to see them anymore and the future generations wont be able to see them too. The whole of the ecosystem relies on being balanced, the balance of plants, animals and the environment as a whole. If you remove just one component, the rest collapses and that's just like saying if all the animals are gone, the whole ecosystem will collapse and we don't want that to happen. Do we?

Key words: Endangered - endangered means ... Almost Extinct, Few in numbers.

Eco system - Nature's balance of animals and plants.

Collapse- Break Down.

Component- Part of something, Piece of something.

PERSPECTIVE:
Who supports animal cruelty and who is against animal cruelty in Asia?
People who support killing animals are poachers. People who support stopping these wildlife crimes are organizations such WWF, (World Wildlife Fund) Rangers, Zoos and many other organizations who support conserving animals or stopping poachers.

Rangers are ........... Rangers are doing a great job, as they give their life to save the animals who are getting poached for their goods. We must support the rangers to stop the poachers and organizations as they help preserve the endangered animals as well as the animals that are being poached. They help the animals to be preserved and safe from harm. We can help support the rangers by signing a pledge and pledge to stop buying furniture from animals and maybe help find black markets and report suspicious behavior.

Singapore is also a main stop for imports/exports to illegal black markets worldwide, and recently, there have been reports that explain the Changi Airport has caught an illegal ship with tons of critically endangered Black Rhino horns, Elephant Tusks and many other animal goods that were to be sold to black markets worldwide. Fortunately, they have caught the poachers and recovered the horns, but the victims of the poachers may not be able to live and die of over bleeding.

Key words:
Rangers- Someone who protects the environment and animals
Poachers- A person who illegally kills or catch animals
Black market- Selling illegal goods above the price fixed by the government
Preserved- To protect or keep alive.
Export- To sell or ship goods to another country.
Import- Buy or take goods from another country that sells or ships to us/ other country.

REFLECTION:
How do we know this is an issue in Singapore?

We know this is an issue as animals help inhabit our world, our environment. Without them, our environment will not progress, we will die of starvation as animals produce meat, the food we eat.

The animals may be the one who helps the plants grow, for our needs, for our fruits and vegetables, for our oxygen, our life. Animals are the one who sustain the environment, we destroy it for our own wants.

If animals were the only ones who inhabit the earth, no natural disasters would happen, the earth will just keep growing and growing, animals will be overjoyed and won't be disturbed by us.

Animals are also our best friends, such as a dog, they play with us and keep us busy, they also help us guard our house, watch our things while we are gone and give us company. We know this is an issue as the animals are close to extinction and there have been recent reports that Changi Airport has captured a few poachers as they have filed an unauthorized plane flight and Changi Airport has investigated and found the critically endangered Black Rhinoceros horns and elephant ivory in the plane and it was confirmed that they were heading to an unauthorized black market in a different country.

Key words:Oxygen- Air, the thing all mammals need to survive.Sustains- To maintain.

RESPONSIBILITY:
What is our responsibility to help animals that are mistreated?

Ways you can help:

  • Pledge not to consume or purchase any illegal wildlife products now. Your responsible consumption will reduce the demand for endangered species.
  • Do not buy souvenirs made from endangered animal parts. You may be unwittingly fuel the illegal wildlife trade and even get into trouble with the law.
  • Do not eat wild meats.
  • Check the ingredients list of traditional medicines before you buy. They may contain ingredients from endangered animals, such as tiger bones, bear gall, Saiga antelope horn and musk deer.
  • Do not keep wild animals as pets. They may be adorable, but wild animals belong in the wild and are often unsuitable as domestic pets.
  • Do not buy wild animals with the intention to rescue them. This is a misconception. Your purchase only creates the impression of demand, which will encourage traders and poachers to take another animal from the wild. You may be implicated for being in possession of a wild animal.
  • Ask questions before you buy the goods – make sure your purchases are legally sourced. When in doubt, do not buy any items with wildlife parts.
  • Spread the word to everyone you know about this issue and how they can help to make a difference.

(Ways you can help is from WWF Singapore website.)

Facts:

  • Many people in Asia think that having a product that consumes animal goods represents having wealth and it looks like they are rich as the products they buy can be really expensive

  • Throughout Asia, many animals are weak and not healthy as they live in in substandard conditions and impoverished environments in some zoos and marine parks Their basic needs are taken away from them and they are loosing their rights. ACRES an organization which helps animal welfare conducts scientific investigations into the zoo and marine parks and with their findings, they aim to work with the zoos themselves and the wider zoo industry, as well as governments and local NGOs (non governmental organisations) to improve the well-beings of those animals.

  • "273,973 Sharks are are killed on our planet each day. Sharks that are used for the famous Shark Fin Soup. This would be about 2.4 million tons of shark meat per year. Additionally, the sharks caught grow smaller and smaller, so that an average of 12.5 instead of 15 kg is more realistic today. This results in exactly 200.000,000 sharks. Included in this figure is an estimated 26-73 million sharks dying only for their fins. (The difference in numbers corresponds to the ratio of fin to body. Considering that most fins are dried before transport and therefore lose 90% of their weight, the 5% this calculation is based on no longer work anyway, so that the figures rise again. When all of these facts are taken together, we remain with the fact that 200 million sharks killed is probably accurate. That would be 547,945 animals per day or 22,831 per hour. And whether or not the fact is right to the last digit, or whether they should be a bit higher or lower – we still have only a minute to midnight if we want to be able to rescue the shark. not a approximate amount of 100 million animals are killed per year." - Shark Project

  • Forests are cut down for many reasons, but most of them are related to money or for people's need to provide for their families. The biggest driver of deforestation is agriculture. Farmers cut forests to provide more room for planting crops or to feed their livestock. Often many small farmers will each clear a few acres to feed their families by cutting down trees and burning them. The Forests that are destroyed are the animal’s home, so that is a form of animal cruelty as they will have no place to live, and they will have to travel and suffer consequences in their journey such as thirst, hunger, and a fight for survival against predators. This is a form indirect cruelty; as we are destroying animal's home.

Wildlife Facts:
  • Poachers use some kind of tranquilizer dart to slowly kill the animal without the others hearing. When the animal is dead, the poachers cut off the horns, tusks, skin, etc. 1 drop of the tranquilizer chemical is enough to kill a 21 people.
