Homework will be posted on the school homework site by Monday afternoon each week. As a class we will discuss homework for the week prior to this. It is your responsibility to read the homework site and complete all homework by Friday. Any problems or questions regarding homework should be asked prior to Friday.
Our Grade 5 year is a very busy one, the effort and motivation to complete tasks aids your development, attitude and progress in class.
IPC:
For each unit you will have a range of homework tasks to support what we are currently doing in class. It may be researching for information on the computer, gathering pictures or materials, making responses on our forum, creating posters or preparing speeches.
MATHEMATICS:
Your homework for Math will vary throughout the year. You will be encouraged to build on your basic facts skills and also practice concepts that have been covered in class. Some work will be set from the Maths in Focus Workbook, worksheets, investigations, or problem solving tasks.
It is an expectation that in Grade 5 that students know their times tables (0-12). If not, I expect a huge effort by the student to know these by the end of Semester 1.
Word Study Programme:
The word study programme is to help build your spelling, reading and vocabulary skills. Every week you will have word based activities to complete for homework. There will two types of activities and the tasks will alternate from one week to the next.
Week 1 - An exercise to build your reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.
Week 2 – Spellings to learn and exercises to develop your spelling strategies. Your spelling list will be based on work you undertake in class (up to 20 words). You must learn your words during the week and will be tested on Friday. Remember to complete a Look, Cover, Write and Check exercise on each one. Build on strategies to visualise your word and sound out letters.
READING JOURNAL:
READ! READ! READ!
Read for FUN, read for CREATIVITY, read to SHARE, read to learn new vocabulary, read to find out about NEW and INTERESTING things!
You are expected to read four times a week for at least 20 minutes every night (Monday to Thursday). Once a fortnight you are required to make a detailed comment about the book you are reading in your reading journal. You are to allow one page for each entry.
Your comment: When considering what to record in this section try to think a little more deeply. You could start by addressing one of the following questions each time.
Are there any new words that I have discovered and could be used in my own writing? What are they? Do I know what they mean?
How did the author start the story? What style of opening has been used? How do I know this?
What genre do you think the story is? Why do you believe this? Do you know any other authors who write in this style?
Describe a character from the story using the evidence to support your views.
Explain how the story makes you feel. What else does it make you think about?
What are some facts that you have discovered that you didn't know prior to reading the book?
Do not feel you have to use just these questions, use them as a guide. I am interested in finding out what you think and feel about your reading, so use this journal to share your thoughts and impressions. Most importantly read books that you enjoy!
Reading material will be chosen by the students, however sometimes home readers will be given out for students to read. These books will be the student's responsibility to return to school on time.
Enjoy your Grade 5 year and make the most of the opportunities that are offered to you!
