We can make a difference by building peace within our INTERNATIONAL community.
FORM: What is peace?
We think peace is the most important thing in the world, we think peace is to have an equal and a fair world for everyone. Peace is when there is no conflict, no wars, everybody is calm and happy. Peace is having good relationships with others, especially a whole group of people (e.g a country, a town). Peace can be created by smiling to one another or doing other polite things that create happiness among people. Peace can also be created through a number of arguments or talk shows so that they can discuss their problems and also try to solve them.
FUNCTION: How is a peaceful community structured in Singapore?
A peaceful community is structured in a way that everyone is able to go to anywhere. By this way, Singapore rarely has a protest, civil war, or any political arguments. The community in Singapore is structured in a way that people from all over the world can be in the same place at the same time. Singapore has a law that everyone can go anywhere in Singapore. In HDB buildings, there are policies. By following these laws and rules in the HDB buildings, people can develop peace as people will learn to share their culture, learn some of the religious events in their own countries and have a wide variety of people living together on one building. A peaceful community is structured in a way that everyone are able to go to anywhere. For example, in Chinatown, everyone is allowed in. But, in parts of different countries, only a type of people can go in. This is a example of a peaceful community because everyone has equal opportunities to go somewhere. There are also lots of activities and clubs in Singapore that you could experience, even in outdoor parks, you are allowed to follow along and learn Taichi in a park if there are a group of people doing taichi.
HDB
CHANGE: Who are the people in our world who have helped to create a more peaceful world? (Everybody) Some of the famous people who have helped create a better world for us are freedom fighters of certain countries like: Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Ban Ki Moon , Mother Teresa and Samantha Smith.
How have these changes made a difference to our society?
These changes have made a difference in our society because we live in a country with so many different races and religions and attend an International School, now days people won't tease you because of your skin colour because peacemakers have raised an awareness on the big issues in our world with discrimination because of various different things.
All these people have the following characteristics:
Risk takers
Principled
Communicators
CONNECTION: How is peace connected to other issues? Racism/poverty/bullying/war (Oliver)
Peace is connected to the UN because he United Nations was found in 1945. After the World War 2, 51 countries committed joined to maintain International PEACE and security. Today there are 192 members of the UN that support their goals and aims for peace.
The UN has their own army called the Blue Berets, there are currently more than 100,000 UN peacekeepers in 16 peace operations happening in the world. The Blue Berets aim to help the civilians in war torn countries.
One of the big PEACE missions the UN has been involved in is in Sudan:
In March 14, 2014 United Nations Peace Keepers went to the Republic of Congo
to help create peace in the international community. They wanted the Congolese Government to take steps to build on the current stability in the country, saying “it is now up to us to win the peace...with energy. On March 17, the United Nations in Sudan says there is people who are suffering, have unwashed clothes, not a lot of food and dirty water. I wish I could help them to live like us how we live in houses and some children that are spoilt. The people in Sudan will love it if they had it.
When there is war in the world the UN tries to stop it by talking to the President of the country.
The goals of the UN is to STOP Global Poverty and war.
PERSPECTIVE: Do people think our local/global community is peaceful? (Aru)
Questions that we surveyed people in our Singapore Community:
Do you think YOUR home country is peaceful? Why or why not? •What does your country do to make a peaceful environment?
•Do you think that Singapore is a peaceful country? Why or why not?
•Do you think that Singapore is more peaceful than your home country? Why or why not?
The survey shows that on a global level majority people think that their home country is peaceful, in general. The information showed that people think that their home country is peaceful because of the following reasons. INDIA= "there is a regular education process to the public to explain the consequences of not having peace. We also elect our own government democraticaly." AUSTRALIA= " police presence and education campaigns." CANADA="The government support cultural shaving and also because there is a diversity of cultures." The survey also shows that people think that their home country is NOT peaceful. The information showed that people think that their home country is NOT peaceful because of the following reasons. INDONESIA= " My home counrty is not peaceful due to high crimes in the major urban areas like Bogor etc." PHILIPPINES= " It is not peaceful because the internal government conflict our country is facing with netizens. And, the growing population of poverty." MALAYSIA= "My home country is not peaceful because of political instability in tension. On a local level ALL of the people think that Singapore is a very peaceful country because of it's law enforcements and low crime rates. Everybody except for one person think that Singapore is more peaceful than their home country because of the government, schools, public areas, public transportation and also because of the rules and regulations. Over all Singapore is one of the most peaceful country in the world.
REFLECTION: What can we learn from the peacemakers to build peace in our community? (Diggi)
We can learn about how they have taken action and what they have done to get their point across to raise awareness and their different beliefs of taking non-voilent actions and protests. We can learn about how they have helped promote peace in their community. We also hope to learn more about how people have supported peacemakers to get the others point across. I want to learn why freedom fighters had to stay in jail for a really long time( I found out that Nelson Mandela was in jail for 27 years and Martin Luther King was sent to jail 29 times.)
RESPONSIBILITY: What is our responsibility to help ourselves and our community to build peace?
Personal:
•Being friends with everyone around you
•Not having arguments with your friend
•Saying 'Thank you' when you received help
•Saying 'Please' when you are asking for something
•Saying things you want to hear from others to others
•Treating people how you want to be treated
•Helping others to carry something
•Making a poster about peace for everyone to see
Local:
•Put up a poster
•Ask people to donate money
•Ask them for a answer to few questions
•Set up a activity for your neighbors
•Set up a campaign in your neighbourhood
Global:
•Support the UN's intentions
•Stop bad intentions
•Ask and persuade every country to support the UN.
You could take action by being polite and be nice to someone. Just saying please and thank you also works. You could also think slightly bigger and make friends with people from another country. Or you could think even bigger and do a fundraiser and donate the money to United Nations. Any action makes a difference.
Nelson Mandela=Diggi
Nelson RolihlahlaMandela was a civil rights fighter of South Africa and ended most of the racial discrimination that was there in Africa. He was born on the 18 of July 1918 and passed away on 5th dec 2013.
This man that changed the world grew up in a tiny village and was the first member of his family to attend school. His father, who served as a counselor to tribal chiefs, died when he was 9, and the boy was adopted. He got his degree from the College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand where he studied law. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resisting against the National Party's apartheid policies after 1948.
Working as a lawyer Nelson Mandela was repeatedly put into jail for a number of rebellious activities. He was in prison for 27 years of his life. Mandela was a master of disguise and a genius at evading arrest. An international campaign was made to release Nelson Mandela from jail. During his years in prison, Nelson Mandela's reputation grew steadily. He was widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa. He was finally released from jail in 1990. He became a symbol of the anti-aphartheid movement as it grew strength.
Nelson Mandela served as president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He followed the the non-violent ways of fighting and he was inspired by a freedom fighter and father of the nation of India, Mahatma Gandhi. He is often called the father of the nation of Africa.
After Leaving office, Nelson Mandela remained a devoted champion and a role model of peace and social justice. He made a number of organisations including the influential Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Elders, an independent group of public figures who are committed to resolving global issues and human suffering. He had won the nobel peace prize in 1993. In 2002, Nelson Mandela became a vocal advocate of AIDS awareness and treatments. Many people believe that if they had not taken action then, now it would have been an even bigger issue than it was back then. Unfortunately, he passed away on the 5th of December 2013 because of a prolonged respiratory infection. He passed away at the age of 95.
He was an inspirational person who fought the war of racism and also ended it in South Africa.
Ban Ki Moon=Oliver
Ban ki Moon became the eighth UN Secretary General in 2006. Before then, he was a diplomat in South Korea, where he served as Foreign Minister. His diplomat service started after graduating from college. His first post was at his nations embassy in India. He quickly earned a reputation from his clever diplomat skills. Diplomat skills are where you are able to interact with other people to help solve conflict.
Ban Ki Moon was born on a North Korean farm. His destiny was to become a diplomat. He was a star pupil at school and was chosen to send a message to the United Nations. In 1962, he won a competition. His prize was a trip to America, where he met President John.F.Kennedy. He told him about what he wanted to be when he was older.
Ban Ki Moon studied International Relations and got a Masters degree and he passed the test from Harvard University. He speaks English, French, German and Japanese. He has a very disciplined work ethic and splits his schedule into five-minutes blocks. The Korean press calls him the "slippery eel" because of his ability to evade tricky questions.
In his time as the UN boss, he has dealt with many difficult issues. He has very strong views on Global Warming and has tried repeatedly to persuade President Bush to cut the USA's carbon emissions. He has taken an active role in Iran's and North Korea's nuclear intentions. Ban Ki Moon has also tried to negotiate a deal to solve the Darfur crisis. He seems well equipped to deal with future global problems. Ban KI Moon his best skill that he is the best at is. His leader skills and diplomat skills.
Mother Teresa=Aru
Mother Teresa was born in Albania. Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu was her real name. She was catholic. In her early years she set off on a journey to help promote peace. She went to Ireland for a while then she went to India in a city named Calcuttta. To adapt she learned hindi the language spoken all over India and also the locl language,Bengali. She was a teacher for 17 years at at a convent school until she said that she got a message from god to stop teaching and give her life to the poor to create peace. Her plan was to help the poor by making a home in the temple. But the locals were unhappy and threw stones at Mother teresa to stop her. To prove herself correct and also to stop the locals' anger she did a hinduism right, spraying water from the ganges river on a dying man. By seeing this the locals were shocked and gave her permission to continue what she was doing. She built a center where thousands were cared for. That includes children and adults. About one year later Pope came to Calcutta and gave her a ceromoneal limousine she sold it off and used the money to start a leper coloney. This is where all the homeless had homes.
In 1979 Mother Teresa gave a speech about peace in India:
"Let us not use bombs and guns to overcome the world. Let us use love and compassion. Peace begins with a smile. Smile five times a day at someone you don't really want to smile at. Do it for peace. Let us radiate the peace of God and so light His light and extinguish in the world and in the hearts of all men all hatred and love for power. Today, if we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other-that man, that woman, that child is my brother or my sister. If everyone could see the image of God in his neighbor, do you think we would still need tanks and generals? Peace and war begin at home. If we truly want peace in the world, let us begin by loving one another in our own families. If we want to spread joy, we need for every family to have joy."
Her speech and action won the Nobel peace prize and many more. She made 500 centers for people to be cared for. She devoted her life to this until 1997. That was when she passed away. When she passed away she instantly known as a saint.
Today, Mother Teresa's centers are still working. The poor are still getting cared for. Many people in Calcutta think that she has made a big difference to India by her actions. But on the other hand some people are unhappy because Mother Teresa tried helping hindus when she herself is catholic. Another famous quote by Mother Teresa that still carries on is:
"If we have no peace it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other."
Martin Luther King jr.=Sean
Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968). He fought the white men for equality. At that time, racism was a great issue. In America, people who didn't have the same skin tone and culture as white men, they were forced out or used as a slave.
Martin Luther King was one of the few people who have made a great impact on the world that we live in.
Martin Luther King won the Nobel peace prize in the year 1964. Martin Luther King is one of the youngest Nobel peace prize winners. Unluckily, he died in 1968 when he was on the balcony of one of the motel rooms (Lorraine Motel) which is now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum.
He has made a great impact on the world's communities, few believe that racism in the world could have been a much more bigger issue than it currently is. These changes have made a big difference to our society.
Martin Luther King Jr. was put in jail 29 times! This was because he was always trying to help the 'black' people have more freedom. This has changed our lives, but mostly the lives of the Americans. This is because, Martin Luther King Jr. has persuaded the 'racist' people in America to change the laws so that the 'black' people can have more freedom.
Samantha Smith=SeEun
Samantha Reef Smith was a peace activist. A peace activist means that she was one of the people who made a difference in this world in a positive way. Samantha Smith is very famous around the world as she was the youngest Ambassador of America.
In December 1982, Samantha Smith in the age of 10 wrote a letter to the Soviet President Yuri Andropov about stopping the nuclear war against US and how to promote peace.
Samantha Smith was encouraged to write a letter by her mother. Once Samantha Smith asked her mother why doesn't anyone write a letter to the Yuri Andropov, the Premier of the Soviet Union(Russia) to contribute to stopping the war and her mother answered 'Why don't you'. Samantha Smith decided to write a letter to Yuri Andropov. Samantha Smith made everyone stop and think! They thought about what they were doing and whether it is a right thing to do. In the letter she wrote the sentence that made people think was:
"If we could be friends by just getting to know each other better, then what are our countries really arguing about? Nothing could be more important than not having a war if a war could kill everything."
This made people realize what they were doing wrong. Unluckily Samantha Smith died in 1985 only 3 years after she became the ambassador of America. She died in a plane crash at a young age, sadly, she was no longer alive.
